Laudate Singers Society – Call for Composer-in-residence

Laudate Singers Society is seeking a composer in residence for the 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 seasons.

Laudate Singers Society is a choral society based in North Vancouver. The Society has two choirs under its umbrella: Paragon Singers and Laudate Singers. A committed champion of Canadian choral music, Laudate Singers Society commissions and performs new Canadian works. Since 1995, Laudate Singers and, more recently, Paragon Singers, have been mentoring and nurturing young composers through their composer-in-residence program. Our audiences are often the first to ever experience new works by established and emerging composers. By having a composer in residence sing in Laudate Singers, the composer can see and hear their pieces in real time, they can write for the specific voices of the choral singers on hand and incorporate the themes of each concert and whatever additional instrumentation may be used for that particular concert.

Duties:
– Write two original choral compositions per season. Works will reflect the theme of the individual concert programs and incorporate any guest instrumentalists.
– Work closely with the artistic director.
– Sing in one of the sections of Laudate Singers depending on the successful candidate’s voice type. All singers are paid an honorarium.

Application:
– Please provide a resumé of musical training and experience.
– Please provide recordings and scores of 3 previous compositions.
– All applicants must audition as singers with four songs of contrasting style (preferably not jazz or pop); at least three different languages must be represented, including German, Italian, Latin, French and English. One selection should be from the Baroque period which displays the ability to sing coloratura passages.
– All applicants must be either Canadian citizens or permanent residents.

Contact Lars Kaario at info@laudatesingers.com or text at 604-722-2696 for further information or to set up a meeting and audition time.

Compensation:
– The choir will pay the composer $800 CAD for each new choral work upon receipt of the final version (for a total of $1,600 for the two compositions).
– The choir will produce, at its expense, the physical copies of the new choral work for rehearsal and performance.
– The choir will record, at its expense, the new work and provide a copy of the recording to the composer.

Laudate Singers Society has exclusive rights to the new commissions for 12 months following the premiere. After 12 months, the composer-in-residence has full rights to their piece and may publish it and have it performed as they see fit.
