As most arts organizations shut down temporarily and moved their work online during the 2020 Covid crisis, new ways of working with artists and audiences has emerged. In light of these changes, how do arts organizations ensure that the artists they work with are being treated fairly and paid for their work? How do artists negotiate their fees and roles for online formats? Join practicing artist Annie Briard and CARFAC National Executive Director April Britski for a discussion on the updated CARFAC Fee Schedule and new guidelines for paying artists. Hear how fees for artists are negotiated, and how both organizations and artists can work together to ensure we maintain a vibrant arts community during this time. This session is ideal for artists and arts organization staff who are interested in expanding their art practice into online formats.

About the Presenters:

Annie Briard (BFA, MFA) challenges visual perception through lens and light-based work by drawing from paradigms in psychology, neuroscience and metaphysics. Her solo and group exhibitions have been presented across Canada and internationally including at the Vancouver Art Gallery, Burrard Arts Foundation (Vancouver), Art Souterrain (Montreal), Three Shadows Photography Centre (Beijing), the Lincoln Film Centre and the AC Institute (NYC), among many others. She regularly develops her research through artist residencies which have spanned Los Angeles, Spain, Iceland and beyond. Briard has worked at the helm of various artist-run organizations in the past and currently teaches at Emily Carr University of Art + Design.

April Britski is the Executive Director of CARFAC, Canada’s national association for visual artists. She has worked and volunteered as an art educator, curator, and arts administrator since 1998, and joined the staff of CARFAC National in 2005. She is a co-founder of Artists’ Legal Services Ottawa and the Visual Arts Alliance, and she has served on several boards of cultural policy and artist-run organizations. April’s primary responsibility at CARFAC is the development and implementation of organizational policies and strategies related to artists’ legal and economic rights. She is actively involved in the research, development, and coordination of advocacy efforts, including CARFAC’s Artist’s Resale Right campaign. She assists with negotiating collective agreements for visual and media artists under the Status of the Artist Act, as well as other national voluntary agreements with presenters.
