SUMMARY:Exhibition: Membranes and Pith 305 & Reverie 25
DESCRIPTION:April 15 2024 – March 15\, 2025\nExhibition: Membranes and Pith 305 & Reverie 25\nCanada Line – Aberdeen Station\nThe Aberdeen Canada Line Station Art Wrap is presented in partnership with City of Richmond Public Art. What emotions or memories can food unearth? What do our meals reveal about our sense of belonging\, family and history? In Membranes and Pith 305 and Reverie 25\, Vancouver-based multidisciplinary artist Cherry Archer utilizes the evocative powers of culinary plants deeply rooted in her Trinidadian heritage to create images that awaken memories of her family and culture. She freezes produce in water\, creating a “botanical ice tile\,” which she then illuminates with coloured light\, photographs\, and prints in large format.\nWebsite: https://www.richmondartgallery.org/cherry-archer

SUMMARY:Joselito Macapagal: The Joy of Seeing
DESCRIPTION:June 25 – September 23\nJoselito Macapagal: The Joy of Seeing\nRichmond Cultural Centre Annex\n7660 Minoru Gate\nPresented by the Richmond Art Gallery. The Joy of Seeing presents a selection of realistic and semi-abstract watercolour\, oil\, and acrylic paintings created between 2020 and 2022 by Richmond-based Filipino-Canadian artist Joselito Macapagal. His work captures fleeting yet memorable moments from his everyday life and travels: the bustling produce aisle in a local market\, pre-storm clouds at Macdonald Beach\, the distinctive nipa hut in the Philippines\, and a steaming churro cart in Mexico. Using painting as a form of mediation and storytelling\, Macapagal invites the audience into a world where he shares his joy of translating the colours\, textures\, lines\, and shapes of such scenes in his paintings.\nWebsite: https://www.richmondartgallery.org/the-joy-of-seeing

SUMMARY:Exhibition: It Begins with Knowing and Not Knowing
DESCRIPTION:July 20 – September 29\nExhibition: It Begins with Knowing and Not Knowing\nRichmond Art Gallery\n7700 Minoru Gate \nJoin Richmond Art Gallery curator Zoë Chan and several artists from the It begins with knowing and not knowing exhibition for an informal tour. Opening launch to immediately follow. \nIn a world rife with injustice\, pain\, and uncertainty\, this compelling group of artists engage with dimensions of spirituality\, ceremony\, dreams\, and ritual to find greater meaning\, rebuild ties with community\, bolster a sense of self\, or regain a sense of optimism. The Gallery is transformed by new and recent works including photographs\, cyanotypes\, textiles\, sculptures\, videos\, ceramics\, paintings\, and performance. \nRebecca Bair translates her hair-care rituals into a language of care in a series of cyanotypes featuring imprints of her hair extensions and wet curls. Xinwei Che invites visitors to slow down and consider geological time in her use of clay and performance. Patrick Cruz paints alternate realities based on his experimentations with past-life regression techniques. Zoë Kreye constructs ethereal immersive installations with textiles painted using her entire body. Ogheneofegor Obuwoma’s striking film delves into the difficulties of their experiences at a Catholic boarding school. Michelle Sound finds joy in the utilization of material practices like beadwork and drum making in the face of ongoing impacts of colonial violence on family members and Indigenous communities. Ximena Velázquez (La PosmoBaby) nurtures ties to her mother country Mexico through the cooking of her great grandmother’s recipes. \nWebsite: https://www.richmondartgallery.org/it-begins-with-knowing-and-not-knowing \nImage: Ogheneofegor Obuwoma\, In Memory of Who We Were\, 2021\, video (still)\, Courtesy of the artist
