DESCRIPTION:Ongoing – April 4\nExhibition: The Chromophiliacs\nRichmond Art Gallery\n7700 Minoru Gate\nJanuary 24\, 1pm-4pm: Opening Reception and Tour\nThis winter\, Richmond Art Gallery will explode with colour with works by Diyan Achjadi\, Moozhan Ahmadzadegan\, Maru Aponte\, Sandeep Johal\, Yaimel López Zaldívar\, Laura Meza Orozco\, Osvaldo Ramirez Castillo\, Malina Sintnicolaas\, Charlene Vickers\, and Jan Wade. Published at the beginning of the twenty-first century\, David Batchelor’s book Chromophobia (2000) critically examined what the author termed “chromophobia”—the fear of colour. Historically marginalized and othered within European and North American culture\, colour continues\, even today\, to be linked to notions of impurity\, primitivism\, and decadence. A dynamic response to his still timely thesis\, The Chromophiliacs is an electrifying showcase of artists profoundly inspired by colour as well as a myriad of craft practices and cultural aesthetics. DESCRIPTION:January 24 – April 4\nCollection Close-up: Juan Carrillo de la Cruz’s #62\nRichmond Art Gallery\n7700 Minoru Gate\nDonated to Richmond Art Gallery by Arthur Richardson in 1994\, this work by Jalisco artist Juan Carrillo de la Cruz exemplifies the rich artistic tradition of the Huichol or Wixárika community in Northwestern Mexico. For the Huichols\, the realm of spirituality is intricately woven into the fabric of daily life\, and their art is a vivid expression of this very present relationship with the cosmos. The imagery and colour palette in Huichol art brim with symbolism. DESCRIPTION:March 26 – April 4\nWildwoman\nGateway Theatre\n6500 Gilbert Road\nA Gateway Theatre and Alberta Theatre Projects Production. A seductively funny\, daring twist on regal history. In Wildwoman\, we follow the story of Catherine de Medici\, the young\, newlywed of King Henry II of France\, who thinks her life at court will be a fascinating forum of political discourse. Instead\, the palace is a cruel and disturbing place where her singular function is to be a baby-making machine for male heirs. Even the other women at her side\, a scheming lady-in-waiting and the king’s power-hungry mistress\, seem to mostly fend for themselves. The only kinship she finds is with the paperback-romance hot\, head-to-toe hair wildman kept in the dungeon as one of the king’s collection of caged oddities. The photo installation depicts two concrete lion finials salvaged from the gates of a demolished Vancouver Special. Each season\, the lions are painted and placed in various overgrown locations throughout the city.
