SUMMARY:Meet the Author: Amanda Sung
DESCRIPTION:November 29\, 2pm-3pm\nMeet the Author: Amanda Sung\nFresh Press Coffee\n6386 Number 3 Road\nBe the envy—catch Amanda Sung at Richmond’s pride and joy: Fresh Press Coffee\, loved by our local community. RSVP today and see you there! Think Sex and the City—if Carrie\, Miranda\, Charlotte\, and Samantha were Asian Canadian immigrants navigating not just love and career\, but the complexities of intergenerational baggage\, cultural curveballs\, and all the gendered nonsense the world throws at them. isn’t a sob story. It’s the sisterhood and sass you love\, with a sharper edge and a deeper heart. In the wild and wonderful world of women’s fiction\, stories by and about Asian women are\, let’s be honest\, a bit like spotting a phoenix. That’s why your support means for the world—to me and to every future storyteller who needs proof that our voices matter!\nWebsite: https://www.instagram.com/freshpresscoffeebar

SUMMARY:Exhibition: The Chromophiliacs - Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:January 24 – April 4\nExhibition: The Chromophiliacs\nRichmond Art Gallery\n7700 Minoru Gate\nJanuary 24\, 1pm-4pm: Opening Reception and Tour\nThis winter\, Richmond Art Gallery will explode with colour with works by Diyan Achjadi\, Moozhan Ahmadzadegan\, Maru Aponte\, Sandeep Johal\, Yaimel López Zaldívar\, Laura Meza Orozco\, Osvaldo Ramirez Castillo\, Malina Sintnicolaas\, Charlene Vickers\, and Jan Wade. Published at the beginning of the twenty-first century\, David Batchelor’s book Chromophobia (2000) critically examined what the author termed “chromophobia”—the fear of colour. Historically marginalized and othered within European and North American culture\, colour continues\, even today\, to be linked to notions of impurity\, primitivism\, and decadence. A dynamic response to his still timely thesis\, The Chromophiliacs is an electrifying showcase of artists profoundly inspired by colour as well as a myriad of craft practices and cultural aesthetics. Curated by Zoë Chan.\nWebsite: https://www.richmondartgallery.org/thechromophiliacs\nRichmond Sentinel article: https://richmondsentinel.ca/article-detail/61853/richmond-art-gallerys-the-chromophiliacs-packs-a-powerful-and-artistic-antidote

SUMMARY:Speaker Series - Resisting Remoteness: Connecting History\, Design\, and Comics in the Study of Northeast India
DESCRIPTION:March 30\, 12pm-1pm\nSpeaker Series – Resisting Remoteness: Connecting History\, Design\, and Comics in the Study of Northeast India\nOnline\nIndia’s Northeast is often stereotyped as “remote”—cut off from dynamic and global historical processes happening elsewhere. This presentation challenges the myth of Northeast India’s isolation by exploring the connected history of a long-forgotten Northeast Indian labour unit during the First World War. But it does so by challenging simultaneously the isolation of scholarly disciplines at KPU. We present a work-in-progress—a story told in comics form—that brings together faculty and student experts across KPU\, from fields as diverse as the Digital Humanities\, Fine Arts\, History\, Design\, and 3D Printing.\nWebsite: https://www.kpu.ca/arts/speakerseries

DESCRIPTION:April 16\, 6pm\nLulu Series: Rode Work/Under City\nRichmond Cultural Centre – Theatre Under The Stairs\n7700 Minoru Gate\nJapanese artist collective SIDE CORE is known for site-specific public projects that blur the boundaries between contemporary art\, skate culture and urban infrastructure. The group will discuss their multi-channel video installation rode work ver. under city. Created in collaboration with renowned skate film crew\, Far East Skate Network\, the piece captures skaters navigating Tokyo’s subterranean environments — including stormwater basins\, disused transit tunnels and maintenance corridors.
