SUMMARY:Photography Exhibition: HONG WO 同和
DESCRIPTION:October 19 – December 31\nPhotography Exhibition: HONG WO 同和\nCity of Richmond Archives\, Richmond Cultural Centre\n7700 Minoru Gate\nHong Wo & Co. General Merchants and its owner Ling Lam have a rich history that intersects with the development of Richmond. In the late nineteenth century\, Ling Lam\, a young immigrant from China\, arrived in Victoria. At this time\, the Chinese Immigration Act was in place\, a discriminatory law requiring all migrants from China to pay a head tax in order to enter Canada. Despite such barriers\, Lam soon moved to Vancouver\, where he studied English and worked in local canneries. In 1895\, Lam purchased property in Steveston and opened the Hong Wo store\, whose Chinese name 同和 means “Peace Together” or “Living in Harmony.”\nWebsite: https://www.richmondartgallery.org/hong-wo

SUMMARY:Exhibition – Unit Bruises: Theodore Wan & Paul Wong\, 1975-1979
DESCRIPTION:April 20 – June 30\nExhibition – Unit Bruises: Theodore Wan & Paul Wong\, 1975-1979\nRichmond Art Gallery\n7700 Minoru Gate\nOpening Reception: April 20\, 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm\nUnit Bruises brings together the works of two Chinese-Canadian conceptual artists active during the 1970s: Theodore Saskatche Wan (b. 1953; d. 1987) and Paul Wong (b. 1954). By mobilizing their own respective bodies\, and the visual languages of medical and procedural illustrations\, both artists subverted notions of objectivity that have been naturalized through such hegemonic imagery. Through these intensely physical works\, the two artists respectively asserted their othered subject-positions as people of colour as well as ruminated on the topics of illness\, death\, and the human condition. Curated by Michael Dang.\nWebsite: https://www.richmondartgallery.org/unitbruises

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Ya-Wei Lin – Invisibility
DESCRIPTION:Ongoing – June 24\nExhibition: Ya-Wei Lin – Invisibility\nRichmond Cultural Centre Annex – The Annex Gallery\n7660 Minoru Gate\nPhotography\, whether still or animated\, is Richmond-based artist Ya-Wei Lin’s preferred medium for narrating the world\, including daily activities\, life experiences\, events\, and moments as she sees them. Since 2010\, her ongoing photographic practice has focused on exploring the meaning of visibility in the context of urban culture. These images depict the fleeting and subtle moments of the seemingly unchanging cityscape\, such as the geometric shapes of the many high-rise buildings and urban dwellers’ routine social behavior.\nWebsite: https://www.richmondartgallery.org/Invisibility
