SUMMARY:Exhibition: Tides Within
DESCRIPTION:January 5 – March 24\nExhibition: Tides Within\nRichmond Cultural Centre Annex – The Annex Gallery\n7660 Minoru Gate\nTides Within brings together Richmond-based artists Fanny BokYin Tang and Debra Zhou\, whose practices share a deep desire to harmonize inner freedom with the rhythms of the natural world. Tang’s surreal seascapes reflect on environmental fragility and Buddhist teachings\, blending playful marine life with symbolic coral forms. Zhou’s abstract watercolour landscapes are rooted in her experience of pregnancy and early motherhood\, evoking the resonance between the creation of life and the cosmos beyond. Using water as a central metaphor for connection and impermanence\, both artists offer introspective visual languages shaped by the aesthetics of Chinese ink brush painting.\nWebsite: https://www.richmondartgallery.org/tides-within

SUMMARY:Exhibition: The Chromophiliacs
DESCRIPTION:Ongoing – April 4\nExhibition: The Chromophiliacs\nRichmond Art Gallery\n7700 Minoru Gate\nJanuary 24\, 1pm-4pm: Opening Reception and Tour\nThis winter\, Richmond Art Gallery will explode with colour with works by Diyan Achjadi\, Moozhan Ahmadzadegan\, Maru Aponte\, Sandeep Johal\, Yaimel López Zaldívar\, Laura Meza Orozco\, Osvaldo Ramirez Castillo\, Malina Sintnicolaas\, Charlene Vickers\, and Jan Wade. Published at the beginning of the twenty-first century\, David Batchelor’s book Chromophobia (2000) critically examined what the author termed “chromophobia”—the fear of colour. Historically marginalized and othered within European and North American culture\, colour continues\, even today\, to be linked to notions of impurity\, primitivism\, and decadence. A dynamic response to his still timely thesis\, The Chromophiliacs is an electrifying showcase of artists profoundly inspired by colour as well as a myriad of craft practices and cultural aesthetics. Curated by Zoë Chan.\nWebsite: https://www.richmondartgallery.org/thechromophiliacs\nRichmond Sentinel article: https://richmondsentinel.ca/article-detail/61853/richmond-art-gallerys-the-chromophiliacs-packs-a-powerful-and-artistic-antidote\nPancouver: https://pancouver.ca/the-chromophiliacs-exhibition-at-richmond-art-gallery-reflects-diversity-of-artistic-practices-in-the-region/

SUMMARY:Collection Close-up: Juan Carrillo de la Cruz’s #62
DESCRIPTION:January 24 – April 4\nCollection Close-up: Juan Carrillo de la Cruz’s #62\nRichmond Art Gallery\n7700 Minoru Gate\nDonated to Richmond Art Gallery by Arthur Richardson in 1994\, this work by Jalisco artist Juan Carrillo de la Cruz exemplifies the rich artistic tradition of the Huichol or Wixárika community in Northwestern Mexico. For the Huichols\, the realm of spirituality is intricately woven into the fabric of daily life\, and their art is a vivid expression of this very present relationship with the cosmos. The imagery and colour palette in Huichol art brim with symbolism. Collection Close-up is an ongoing initiative where we highlight a Permanent Collection work \, which has a formal or thematic link to the Gallery’s featured exhibition\, in our Art Lounge. #62 was selected for its resonance with the themes of the exhibition The Chromophiliacs.\nWebsite: https://www.richmondartgallery.org/collection-close-up-62

SUMMARY:Steveston Folk Guild: Earle Peach and Illiteratty
DESCRIPTION:March 19\, 7:30pm\nSteveston Folk Guild: Earle Peach and Illiteratty\nBritannia Shipyards National Historic Site: Chinese Bunkhouse\n5180 Westwater Drive\nWe are proud to welcome Illiteratty back to SFG again. Last years concert was very memoreable. The band plays a wide range of musical styles\, such as original swing\, European cabaret\, celtic\, rockabilly\, and off course folk. The full compliment of guitar\, mandolin\, violin\, standup base\, and small percussion allows for music which is compassionate\, funny\, angry\, idiosyncratic\, original and extremely varied. Well that definitely is a mouthful. Earle has been writing songs since he was 12 years old. He has more self penned songs in his arsenal than the band can perform in one show\, so expect a great time with foot tapping\, hand clapping\, and moments that will become memories.\nWebsite: https://www.stevestonfolk.net/

SUMMARY:Wildwoman
DESCRIPTION:March 26 – April 4\nWildwoman\nGateway Theatre\n6500 Gilbert Road\nA Gateway Theatre and Alberta Theatre Projects Production. A seductively funny\, daring twist on regal history. In Wildwoman\, we follow the story of Catherine de Medici\, the young\, newlywed of King Henry II of France\, who thinks her life at court will be a fascinating forum of political discourse. Instead\, the palace is a cruel and disturbing place where her singular function is to be a baby-making machine for male heirs. Even the other women at her side\, a scheming lady-in-waiting and the king’s power-hungry mistress\, seem to mostly fend for themselves. The only kinship she finds is with the paperback-romance hot\, head-to-toe hair wildman kept in the dungeon as one of the king’s collection of caged oddities. His friendly and feral presence gradually awakens Catherine’s own wild side\, and once she unleashes it\, no one is safe from her vengeful wrath.\nWebsite: https://www.gatewaytheatre.com/events/wildwoman/
