The Richmond Singers

A 55 Voice Women’s Choir

COME EXPERIENCE A WORLD TOUR IN ONE EVENING. Stirring songs from South Africa, China and Japan reveal the true sound of Richmond united in harmony – F.Katz, Director

The Richmond Singers are preparing for a family-friendly spring concert on May 24 at Fraserview Church in Richmond, featuring the Vancouver mens’ choir, The Squares, and guest musicians Chris Haas on percussion and Steven Johnston on bass. This 55-member women’s choir is led by artistic director Fabiana Katz and accompanied by Hilary Jung.

“For this concert, I wanted to draw from the rich backgrounds of our singers, creating a program that authentically represents the voices in our choir,” says Fabiana. “Our music is a mirror of our community.”

The repertoire reflects that vision, drawing from musical traditions around the world. Audiences can expect an evening of soul stirring songs from South Africa, East Asia, Scandinavia, and the Celtic tradition, alongside lyrical works and folk-inspired pieces. The program offers a journey through cultures and styles that resonate strongly with the choir’s members.

The Richmond Singers are delighted to welcome special guests The Squares, who recently performed at the Closing Gala of the world-renowned Kathaumixw Festival in Powell River in 2025. “It’s incredibly exciting to share the stage with musicians of this calibre,” says chorister Adrienne McAlpine. “Their energy and artistry will bring something very special to the concert.” The choir was honoured to have been selected to perform at this festival alongside high calibre choirs from across Canada, the United States and Mexico and as far away as Taiwan, Slovenia and New Zealand.

The Richmond Singers is a 55 voice women’s choir which began performing in 1971. Their purpose is “to sing, in harmony, a variety of music for the enjoyment of the members as well as to give public and private performances for the listening pleasure of others”. The Richmond Singers Ensemble was created from this long standing choir to perform in spaces that cannot accommodate a larger choir. They will begin their Spring program with sing-outs at senior homes and care facilities in February.

During their September to June musical season, the Richmond Singers practices on Monday evenings from 7 – 9:30 PM at Broadmoor Baptist Church in Richmond. In addition to weekly practices, they plan workshops with choral clinicians, as well as evenings with guest directors. The Richmond Singers have performed in shopping malls, at Richmond City Hall, Hycroft Manor, South Arm Fall Fair, throughout BC, in Ottawa and Newfoundland, and twice at the Kathaumixw International Choral Festival in Powell River. The choir’s major annual performances include Christmas and Spring concerts. The choir’s next concert will be at 3:00 pm at Fraserview Church in Richmond.
