Artist Statement

Born in Hong Kong and immigrating to Canada in 1992, Fanny Ip has long been captivated by the beauty and harmony of Chinese watercolor painting. Her interest in the art form began during her childhood, but it wasn’t until she settled in Richmond, British Columbia, that she rekindled this passion and began taking formal lessons to further develop her skills.

Working with Chinese watercolor, ink, and mixed media on rice paper, Fanny expresses her creativity through delicate brushwork and a deep appreciation for nature. Her paintings reflect her admiration for the natural world—its colors, rhythms, and tranquility—and convey her faith and gratitude for God’s creation. Through her art, she hopes to bring viewers a sense of peace, joy, and thankfulness, inspiring them to see the beauty that surrounds us.

Fanny’s works have been exhibited both locally and internationally, including at the Asia Invitation Art Exhibition in Seoul, South Korea; the Richmond Art Gallery; the Burnaby Art Gallery; the Federation of Canadian Artists in Vancouver; the South Delta Artists Guild; and North Vancouver Arts. She is an Active Member of the Federation of Canadian Artists and continues to share her passion for Chinese watercolor painting within the artistic community.

Artist Biography
As a Chinese watercolour artist, Fanny is deeply captivated by the expressive possibilities of brush ink, and colour on rice paper and silk.  Her work is driven by an enduring fascination with the subtle interplay of brushstrokes, the quality of brush lines, and the delicate balance of ink, watercolour, and water.  These elements come together to bring life into the painting, creating a dynamic relationship between and medium and surface. Her practice bridges the two foundational styles of Chinese painting: Gongbi and Xieyi.  The gongbi style is meticulous and refined, with precise lines and deliberate detail.  In contrast, the Xieyi style is spontaneous and expressive, characterised by bold, fluid strokes.  The focus of her recent works is using different brush and ink techniques, shapeless ink wash to paint landscape, flowers and birds to explore nature.
