Capturing the Light
Artist Statement
I am Ibrahim Yusuf, an internationally recognized artist working in painting and pyrography. My art is shaped by a deep respect for tradition and a passion for contemporary expression. I draw from the richness of heritage while seeking to create something that speaks to the present moment, bridging cultures and generations.
Light has always fascinated me—not only as something we see, but as something we feel. In both paint and flame, I explore how light reveals form, carries emotion, and transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary. Each piece I create is a dialogue between past and present, between what is remembered and what is yet to come.
In 2015/2016, I was honoured with first place in the Buddy Bear Design Competition organized by the German Embassy. That recognition affirmed for me the universal language of art and its power to bring people together across borders. Since then, my journey has taken me across the world, with exhibitions that celebrate both large-scale achievement and intimate connection. Most recently, my work was showcased at the Vancouver Convention Centre in 2024, alongside a series of smaller shows that continue to connect me with diverse audiences.
Art, for me, is more than craft—it is a living language. Through flame, paint, and vision, I aim to honour tradition, capture light, and create works that inspire, uplift, and connect.
