Artist Statement and Biography
Susan Pellaers is a multi-media artist. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1969, the mother of two has resided in Metro Vancouver since 1993. Her art practice began as a member of the South Delta Artists Guild. She is currently working on her degree in Fine Arts at Kwantlen Polytechnic University.
Tapping into society’s stream of consciousness by watching daily news programs and reading non-fiction publications, her artwork identifies the complexities in the day-to-day of human existence on this delicately balanced planet. Her practice has been informed by the writings and artworks of Douglas Coupland which encourage audience interaction on a conceptual plane. She constructs multi-medium installations utilizing found objects which re-purpose concrete notions into abstract concepts. Many of her works utilize photo transfer to meld art technique with real world images; creating an undertow of unease as the viewer’s emotional connection to life experiences engage with the art pieces.
Besides showing her work in many exhibitions at the KPU campus as a member of the KPU Arts Collective, Susan has had work shown in the Art Council of Surrey’s juried show Arts2023 (placing 3rd in painting); the Langley Art Council’s juried show artSpacific; and at the Turnbull Gallery in Surrey. Her piece, Out of Stock (2023) was shown at the Wake-Up Social Justice Music Festival (2023) at KPU, Surrey. Additionally, in 2024 she was a guest speaker and co-coordinator of an art project created with a grade 12 class at North Surrey Secondary School.
