Prepared by the Richmond Arts Coalition

If you’d like to add an event to this monthly list, please send information to rac@richmondartscoalition.com by the 15th of the month preceding your event.

To all Richmond Artists and Arts Supporters,

Thank you so much for continuing to be interested in what is happening in our community. We really do appreciate your support.

If you are not already a member, or if your membership has lapsed, please consider picking up a 2019 membership with RAC so that we can be an even more effective voice for arts advocacy within our community. You can find out how to do so here: https://richmondartscoalition.com/membership/

We are beginning this February listing with one event happening in January, on Thursday of this week, as the Branscombe House Artist-in-Residence program is something that really deserves our support. It is an exciting, community-engaging program and I am looking forward to seeing what comes of it in the upcoming year!

We also have the Canada Council for the Arts coming to town on January 30th, with an information session and one-on-one meetings at Gateway Theatre from 11am to 4:15pm. This is an excellent opportunity to have a conversation on how you can get funded to create your art!

And finally, on February 4th at 4pm. the City of Richmond has an important Finance Committee Meeting where the funding for the Minoru Place Activity Centre (the old senior’s centre being repurposed into an Arts hub) will be discussed and voted on as a Capital Project submission. It would be wonderful to see as many artists there as the room at City Hall can hold. Please attend if you can.

Cheers,
Andrew Wade,
Interim Executive Director,
Richmond Arts Coalition

Adah Hannah – The Decameron Retold
Richmond Art Gallery
7700 Minoru Gate
Opening Reception: February 9, 2pm-5pm. Exhibition: February 10 – April 20.
dad Hannah’s, The Decameron Retold, is a newly commissioned work by the Richmond Art Gallery. It is based on Giovanni Boccaccio’s 14th century work, The Decameron, a collection of novellas comprised of one hundred tales told by ten young women and men sequestered in a villa outside of Florence to escape the Black Plague. For the exhibition Hannah has created a series of video tableaux vivants using Boccaccio’s frame narrative as the departure point. Working with community members in front of and behind the camera, and incorporating local stories gathered through an open call, participants lay their own stories over The Decameron’s structure. This new narrative expands Hannah’s typical improvisational approach to production and community engagement.

Call for Submissions – 2020 Multifaith Calendar
Each year, the Multifaith Action Society invites artists to submit works of art for consideration in its upcoming Multifaith Calendar. The theme for our 2020 edition is: Reimagining Peace and Harmony. Who does not want world peace and harmony in their lives? It is an almost universal desire. But today, the world seems to be moving away from this ideal.

What do you think peace looks like? Is it different from harmony? We all have moments of peace. We can in fact take a snap shot of the moment where we felt peace. But then it seems, the moment moves away from us. Harmony is a little more fluid. It is not just one thing or one moment. Harmony is often created when many notes or many things come together in a new way and create a feeling. This is a chance for artists to think outside the box. If most people want peace and harmony in their lives show us how you reimagine these two precious commodities in today’s world. Our aim is to produce a Calendar that will showcase a variety of interpretations on our theme while creating a visually cohesive publication. We encourage all artists to submit images, including artists who have had their work showcased in past Multifaith Calendars.

Artwork on this theme can be submitted in any medium. All artists are invited to submit including those who have never been featured in the Calendar and those who have been featured in past editions. Work can be in any medium. The interpretation of the theme will be determined by the overall collection of images received. Selected artists will be offered an honorarium of $250 per monthly calendar image, $500 for the cover image, and $100 for smaller inset images placed throughout the Calendar. In addition, selected artists will receive a set of complimentary Calendars once published. Submit digital images in low resolution (jpg/72dpi) to: artsubmissions@multifaithaction.org

Should a piece be chosen, we will contact the artist and request a high resolution version of the image (9″ x 9″, 400dpi).

2019 Richmond Community Foundation High School Scholarship
The Richmond Community Foundation is once again accepting applications for its high school scholarship program. All Richmond students who are graduating in 2019, and plan on pursuing post-secondary studies, are eligible to apply. Sometimes, students think that, due to their grades or field of study, they aren’t likely to win a scholarship. That’s not the case with the Community Foundation. The organization offers multiple scholarships, many of which place more emphasis on community service or extracurricular activities than academic performance. And scholarships are available for everything from social sciences, to the performing arts, to vocational studies. Whatever path your education takes, it’s more likely than not that the Community Foundation can give you a financial boost. In 2018, the Foundation awarded 47 scholarships, together valued at nearly $30,000. That number will be similar – and perhaps even higher – this year. To apply, simply complete the application form on the Foundation’s website, being sure that you include two reference letters.

BC Artist Registry
Calling all BC artists! We invite all British Columbian adults who are artists in any discipline to be counted in the BC Artist Registry. Whether your arts practice is your full-time or part-time career, or your avocational pursuit, you may join the Registry through our simple online form.
Across the province, arts champions in municipalities and local agencies express the need to learn more about artists in their communities, but lack the channels to connect with those individuals. The BC Artist Registry becomes an important tool for reaching artists directly, inviting their participation in surveys and other types of consultation.
The BC Artist Registry uses a simple online form recording an artist’s name, contact information, and field(s) of artistic discipline. Joining the Registry is free, and the personal information remains private and confidential. From time to time, artists on the Registry will be invited to participate in more detailed surveys or other consultations. The Registry will be open for ongoing registration with no deadline, to ensure a growing resource for meaningful statistics and research in our province’s cultural sector.
