Japan’s Children’s Day
Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site
5180 Westwater Drive
10am-5pm. May 5th is a national holiday in Japan called “Children’s Day” or Kodomo-no-hi, a special occasion to honour children’s happiness and well-being. Visitors can join us in a the tradition of making “kabuto” (samurai) helmets out of origami during the Children’s Day weekend. In Japan, homes and businesses may display miniature samurai warrior doll sets (with armor, helmet & sword), and children will make these paper hats to commemorate the holiday. Look for the flying carp (koi) streamer (koinobori) in front of Murakami House, where this activity will take place.
