BC Seniors Week 2023

Celebrate BC Seniors Week in Richmond

Richmond, BC – Join in the City of Richmond and community partners celebration of BC Seniors Week from Monday, June 5 to Sunday, June 11. This years’ theme is ‘Seniors in the Spotlight’, focussing on the arts and the creativity of older adults in the community with over 25 fun, free or low cost programs and events.

BC Seniors Week kicks off with the Opening Event at Gateway Theatre on Monday, June 5 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with live dancing and ukulele and drumming performances from Richmond seniors following a welcome by Mayor Malcolm Brodie. All are welcome to attend this free event with advance registration required. Free transportation is also available to the event from all Richmond community centres.

Highlights of Seniors Week include:

  1. Monday, June 5, 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. – Opening Event – Gateway Theatre

Join this signature kick-off event that celebrates ‘Seniors in the Spotlight’. Light refreshments included.

 

  1. Tuesday, June 6,  2 – 3 p.m. – Card Making with Cricut®  – Brighouse Library

Make a pop-up card using a Cricut® machine that can cut, score and draw using a wide variety of materials, such as cardstock, light fabrics and vinyl. No experience required.

  1. Wednesday, June 7, 10:45 – 11:45 a.m. – Line Dancing Variety – Beginner – Thompson Community Centre

Learn the fundamental steps of line dancing that are adaptable to country, ballroom, rock and roll, disco, Latin and pop music.

  1. Thursday, June 8, 2:15 – 3:30 p.m. – Baroque Dance – West Richmond Community Centre

Enjoy this elegant dance that includes both social (ballroom) dancing and theatrical dancing (ballet) with basic natural movements.

  1. Friday, June 9, 10 – 11:30 a.m. – Improv Workshop – Minoru Centre for Active Living

Share the joy of improv-based drama activities in a fun, safe and low-pressure environment. Come and interact and share a few laughs. No experience required. Light refreshments included.

 

  1. Saturday, June 10, 10:00 – 11:30 a.m. – Fusion Tai Chi and Kung Fu – South Arm Community Centre

Learn the basic steps of these two forms of martial arts that include kicking, developing coordination and balance, and improving breathing technique. No experience required.

  1. Sunday, June 11, 2:00 – 3:30 p.m. – Wild Words Workshop – Richmond Nature Park

Dress for the weather and create a unique, personal and nature-themed prose in this interactive session guided and supported by a professional poet.

Celebrated across Canada, Seniors Week is held each year during the first week of June to commend and recognize the contributions seniors make to their community.
