October 5th, 2024
11am-3pm

‘Roots Unearthed’ is a an exhibition of visual and performance art created by youth, held at the Richmond Cultural Centre Annex (7660 Minoru Gate) on October 5th from 11am-3pm.

This project is a collaboration between the Richmond Arts Coalition (RAC) and School District 38 (SD38). Prior to the exhibition, professional artists Bea Martin and Johnny MacRae will lead a series of art workshops with students around the concept of understanding where they come from (their Roots Unearthed). Youth artists will work with objects from their own or their family’s past, or an object that brings them identity and meaning, and will use that to create visual or spoken word/poetry art!

The exhibition will feature the completed artworks on display, including both filmed performances and physical art creations.

Johnny MacRae is a spoken word (aka. slam) poet living on the unceded ancestral territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), səl̓ilwətaɁɬ (Tsleil-waututh), and sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) nations. Johnny is a versatile artist whose work ranges from a rap about public transit, to quiet reflections on grief, and from evolutionary creation stories, to a history of West Coast maritime disasters.

Through engaging, interactive and creative projects including workshops, classes, community engagement activities and public art, Beatriz (Bea) Martin merges the arts with science and shares her passion for the natural world with her students across Richmond. Her unique approach to arts education is the result of a multidisciplinary background as a character animator, theatre improviser, nature sketcher, certified medical illustrator (CMI), Fulbright Scholar and medical doctor. With genuine curiosity and enthusiasm, Bea thrives supporting the creativity, curiosity and artistic development of people of all ages. Bea received the 2024 Richmond Arts Award for Arts Education.
