Marcato Youth Community Band

A Band for Children and Youth
A Band for Children and Youth

The Marcato Youth Community Band is completing its tenth year as a band for children and youth who love to pursue playing concert band music outside of their classes at school. The band has varied instrumentation, but is always looking for new members, particularly low end (bassoon, baritone, trombone, tuba), and mid range (alto saxes) instruments, and percussionists. Currently, the band members come from 17 different schools, mainly in Richmond but also from Vancouver and a few home school programs. Students rehearse once a week for 1 ½ hours and put together a folder of about 14 concert band pieces to perform at concerts in venues such as retirement communities and malls.

Marcato stands for ‘marked or noticed’; the students created the band’s name themselves, as well as the band’s logo and shirt.

Any student is welcome to join the group if they can play the music we have, and is committed to practice and to regular attendance at rehearsals and concerts; there is no audition. Interested players can come to a rehearsal and sit in to see if the group is a good fit. For further information, please contact the conductor, Brenda Khoo, at bkhoo@shaw.ca .
